Critically acclaimed as a
versatile singing actor, Peter Joshua Burroughs' repertoire encompasses opera,
oratorio, musical theatre and Shakespeare. After his debut in 1999 with The
Washington Opera as Ezekiel Cheever in Robert Ward's The Crucible he also
appeared as Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro. Attention to detail
has led Mr. Burroughs to an operatic repertoire of cleanly etched characters
including Monostatos in The Magic Flute, Don Basilio in Le Nozze di
Figaro, and Dr. Blind in Die Fledermaus, to name a few. Mr.
Burroughs has also performed with The Florentine Opera Company, Wolf Trap Opera,
The Washington Savoyards, the IN Series, Signature Theatre, First Stage
Milwaukee, and the Shakespeare Theatre. He created the title role in Chris
Patton's Fidgety Phil for Gallaudet Theatre, and his European debut took
place at Teatro Signorelli in Cortona, Italy, where he performed the role of
Checco in Studio Lirico's production of Cimarosa's Il Convito.
As a recitalist, Mr. Burroughs has been hailed an intimate and engaging
performer in a vast repertoire ranging from traditional art song recitals
to zarzuela and the dance music of Latin America. Including
Beyond Flamenco at London'Covent Garden, La Movida / Music that Moves!
at the US Department of State, and Schubertiad at the Phillips Collection
in Washington, DC.
Recently, Mr. Burroughs performed the roles of El Chino in Las bodas de
Salsipuedes with Maryland Opera Studio, Julian in La Verbena de la
Paloma, Boy in the American premiere of Opera La Serra,
Spoletta in Tosca
in a Baltimore Opera New Years Gala,. Bill in Barber's A Hand of Bridge,
Marcel Duchamp in Soldier's Naked Revolution, Jan in Janacek's Diary
of One Who Vanished, and recital appearances in Washington, DC.
Upcoming performances include Guillot in Manon with Summer Opera Theatre
and Feasta Della Voce Brahms/Schubert Evening at the Embassy of Austria.
Mr. Burroughs tours Maryland, Virginia and
Washington DC with Kinder Opera Theatre, Children’s Creative Opera Ensemble,
The Unidentified Flying Opera Company and the Washington Opera’s
Artists-in-the Schools Program. He is an Artist Mentor for The Washington Opera and helps
grade school students write and produce their own operas with Opera America's
Music! Words! Opera! curriculum. He is also developing outreach programs
with the Spanish Dance Society of Washington DC which incorporate Opera,
Zarzuela, and Dance with emphasis on cross-cultural communication.
Mr. Burroughs earned his Bachelor of Music degree at Ithaca College and his Master of Music degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was active in the Maryland Opera Studio.
